Joss Whedon, lauded king of fandom, and de facto overseer of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, celebrates his 50th birthday today (June 23). Whedon’s always had a knack for taking pre-established characters – whether it’s The Avengers or a gang of talking toys or the cast of Speed – and making them just that bit more quippy and emotionally rich and awesome. But it’s his original small-screen characters that remain his most beloved.

Digital Spy complied a list of the top fifteen Whedonverse characters:

#7 – Willow Rosenberg
No character in Buffy goes unchanged, but the transformation of Alyson Hannigan’s Willow from meek, overlooked wallflower to scarily self-possessed makes her easily the most dynamic of the core players.

The early potential for Dark Willow is explored in two of the show’s best episodes of all time – ‘The Wish’, which portrays an apocalyptic future in which Willow is a vampire, and ‘Doppelgangland’, in which vampire Willow comes to regular Sunnydale – and the contrast worked so well that Willow herself gradually moved in a darker direction as she grew unhealthily dependent on her magic, unable to maintain any confidence without it. While many viewers were left feeling nostalgic for the loveable, quirky Willow of the early seasons, her progression is a testament to how disinterested Whedon and his co-writers always were in playing it safe.

Willow was also a touchstone for Buffy‘s broader cultural significance, being one of the first major TV characters to have an openly gay relationship. Willow and Tara were treated in exactly the same way as any other romance on the show, and given how rare this still is in mainstream television, it feels all the more powerful in retrospect.

Sarah Michelle Gellar sat down with Reddit to conduct a Q&A session for her fans. She answered questions about Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Crazy Ones and even her co-stars! Aly was brought up twice during the session … take a look at what Buffy herself (Sarah Michelle Gellar) had to say below:

Is Alyson Hannigan as cool in person as she looks in the show?
“They all were. That’s what was so great about the show. Everybody was so unique and brought so much personally and professionally. And she’s pretty funny.”

I know that Alyson was known for pranking everybody on the set, were you ever the victim?
“No I think I was more her co-conspirator.”

Screen Crush compiled a top 10 list of “The Scariest Television Episodes off All Time.” Buffy the Vampire Slayer featured number two on that list – but which episode? If you guessed “Hush” you would be correct. Take a look below at their reasonings for including this episode.

2. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Hush
Despite its premise and title, Joss Whedon’s ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ rarely went full-on horror. Instead, the show usually lived in a pop-fantasy groove, where vampires and other creatures of the night presented a legit threat while leaving plenty of room for quips.

That’s not the case with the season four episode “Hush,” which finds a terrifying group of well-dressed demons named The Gentlemen arriving in Sunnydale, where they steal everyone’s ability to speak and begin a door-to-door murdering spree. Robbed of its trademark snarky dialogue, the show becomes a silent horror movie for 40 minutes, with its cast facing off against creatures that look like they were torn straight out of a 1920s horror flick. Fans of F.W. Murnau will certainly appreciate the nods to German expressionistic horror, but everyone else will just have to recoil at one of the creepiest hours of TV ever produced.

Alyson spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the end of How I Met Your Mother, a possible spin-off, the end of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and possibly working with J.J.Abrams. Take a look below:

Alyson Hannigan who plays Lily on the hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother doesn’t want the fun to end, even though CBS announced the series would sign off after 9 seasons this spring. ”I’m trying to convince [Jason] Segel to do the spin-off,” says Hannigan. “He said he’ll do it if it’s called, Out By Lunch and we can get out by lunch everyday and we only work a couple days a week. I’m like, ‘I’m in.’ We can do it—we work really quickly together.”

At least Hannigan has ample warning that HIMYM will be ending—that wasn’t exactly the case with her last notable role: ”The day that the Entertainment Weekly cover came out [“Buffy Quits”, March 7, 2003]—that was the day we all found out Buffy was over,” recalls Hannigan. “I was devastated. I was just very shocked.”

But Hannigan’s sadness was short-lived thanks to the most wonderful, but (kind of) unlikely savior. “[That same day] I got an amazing phone call saying J. J. Abrams wants to meet with you and I was like, ‘Oh! Well this day just got a lot brighter.’ And I had a wonderful meeting with J.J. Abrams.”

The prolific producer was a fan of Hannigan’s work as Willow on Buffy and wanted to court her for an hour-long TV drama, but she was reticent to sign on to another one so quickly. “I was planning my wedding [to Alexis Denisof, who recurs on HIMYM as blowhard newscaster Sandy Rivers] and I was just coming off Buffy, and I know the hours. I had to make the hardest decision of my life—telling J.J. Abrams I didn’t want to do a one-hour show,” Hannigan says. “I want to do comedy and I want to see my husband once in a while. So I said, ‘Do you maybe want to do a half hour? Like a comedy? Please?’ It was such a nice thank-you and gave me hope that people would want to work with me. I’m forever grateful to him and it made my devastation very short-lived.”

So what show was it? Hannigan says she thinks Abrams was recruiting her for a pilot that didn’t get picked up. “It wasn’t like Lost or something. Could you imagine if I turned down Lost? (Um, no we can’t—but how amazing would Hannigan have been on that show?)

But now that HIMYM is signing off next spring, she’d love to hear from Abrams again: ” I’m available for Star Wars just so you know!”
